I was driving today and felt an odd vibration and whirring sound in the power steering each time I made a turn. When I pulled into the driveway I noticed the engine was smoking and was leaking some sort of fluid or oil. Any suggestions?

The power steering fluid level seems to be OK.

I have a 2005 forester by the way.

Air entering the power steering system creating a bubble causing the whirring sound.

You need to inspect your entire power steering system. The fluid levels may not drop until after it's happened for a while.

Thanks Noximus. Garage says I'm going to need a new steering rack which unfortunately sounds expensive.

I just put one in my STi, got it from Rock Auto for about $200, not that hard to do just have to be careful not to trigger the steering angle sensor....which I did

I'll just leave this here.

I'm not joking when I say it changes the car's feel permanently. This is the best mod hands down I've done to my STI.

For a 2005 Forester the only reasonable swap is a 2004 STI Rack, the later ones you have to change out pretty much everything in the front end. I put an STI rack in mine a month after I got it because I couldn't stand the factory 17.5:1 variable ratio thing. It felt like steering a barge.

The later racks are far far better, but far more effort. Hell at that point its easier to put in an 04 Rack and a 1.5:1 or 2:1 quickener.

05-07 rack is an easy install as well. You just need to swap the subframe to match the 05+ rack. I have an 07 STI rack in my 07 Forester.
