As I near the 300k mark, I start to wonder if I need to change these fluids. I recall that I replaced the stock fluids with a synthetic cocktail that Colin had researched at the time. Opinions are welcome. :)

I did a bunch of a research on this for mine. I ended up deciding to stay with the stock fluids. Unless you track or race your car extensively, there's no real point to go with expensive stuff.

Well, I did replace mine with synthetic at a fairly low mileage. It smoothed out the shift of gears for sure. What I am wondering is now that I am at 290k, does it need replacing?

There's two ways to look at this. 99% of people will NEVER change their trans/diff fluids and they work well enough for the life of the trans. On the other hand, good fluid is what helps the trans move and minimize wear. Like anything, it will wear out over time. I just replaced the trans/diff in a WRX and used all new Amsoil/Redline fluids, think it cost about $220. To me, its a small price to pay to have fresh quality fluid in there.

This is part of routine maintenance. The drain plug magnets will only collect so much metallic debris. When the magnets are full the rest of the shavings just continue to collect in the fluid. If the fluid is synthetic and has gone over 100k kms, it should be changed IMO.
